Waterproofing Solutions at Dekro Paints

Waterproofing building substrates play a pivotal part in preventing structural and decorative defects.

Flat Roofs and Cantilever Ledges

Waterproofing flat roofs and cantilever ledges can be successfully completed with Dekro Hydroclad.

Hydroclad is a self-cleaning, highly durable, copolymer based coating which cures to form a tightly adherent, decorative weatherproof membrane.  As a waterborne-system, it is free from strong odour and toxic risk and may be cleaned with using only water on brushes and spray equipment. The Hydroclad membrane will tolerate thermal movement in the substrate without splitting or cracking and will retain its elastomeric properties even after prolonged exposure to ultra-violet light.  Hydroclad’s chemical and pollution-resistant surface has been specially engineered to shed dirt, ensuring it retains a bright, attractive appearance throughout its life. Its vapour permeable and allows entrapped substrate moisture to escape without causing blistering or delamination.  It may be reinforced with chopped strand matt and is capable of bridging cracks or joints between different substrates.  Finally, it produces an effective barrier to carbon dioxide diffusion and therefore provides reinforced concrete with an excellent defence against harmful effects of carbonation.

It is always imperative to apply the correct primers to promote adhesion so please consult with your Dekro representative for the correct application procedures.

Parapet Walls and Horizontal Surfaces

To encapsulate parapet walls and horizontal ledges to prevent moisture ingress into the substrate we recommend applying Dekro Fibre Strength or membrane reinforced Dekro Rainproof.

Fibre Strength is specially formulated to give a slight textured appearance and bridge cracks without being too rough.  This results in a coating that has low dirt retention, giving a much longer coating life. Fibre Strength can be use on roofs and on parapets where water proofing is required.

Rainproof is a waterproofing paint if used as liquid membrane. It forms a waterproofing system, if used in combination with Polyester stitchbond membrane.

Option 1

Apply two coats of Fibre Strength to all areas before over coating with flexible waterproofing acrylic.

Option 2

Apply to the substrate one Primer / sealer coat of Rainproof, diluted with 20% water and allow to dry (drying time is less than one hour at standard condition 25ºC and 50% humidity).

Apply one coat of Rainproof as supplied, to an area not exceeding one metre width of the Polyester Fabric used (Eramesh) and firmly press the fabric into the coating, before the Rainproof coating begins to dry. Repeat the process in one metre length at a time.  Overlap the fabric at the bottom of the parapet onto the roof.  Allow the application to dry before proceeding. (Drying time is 1 – 1½ hour at standard conditions 25ºC and 50% humidity).

Acrylic Waterproofing Systems

This Acrylic and membrane system is used to waterproof most roof surfaces as it allows for some movement and when applied correctly creates an effective waterproof seal. Waterproofing is a skill and often previous waterproofing attempts need to be removed. The patching small areas on a leaking roof are not recommended as it is often a “hit and miss” scenario becoming more costly. Rainproof is a waterproofing paint if used as liquid membrane. Waterproofing Wall Coatings

Hairline cracks are the most common cause for moisture ingress into the substrate causing dampness and promote mould growth inside your home. There are many ways to bridge hairline cracks but some solutions are very expensive.  Also once the repairs to these cracks have been completed you are mostly left with unsightly flat filler spots.

Most textured coats contain sand, silicate, mica or other coarse particles.  These are used to assist in the textured appearance and to bridge cracks.  The disadvantage is that these coatings have a high degree of dirt retention.

Super Fibretex is specially formulated with cellulose fibres to give a slight textured appearance and bridge hairline cracks without being too rough.  This results in a coating that has low dirt retention, giving a much longer coating life.

Waterproofing Face Brick Surfaces

Porous Face brick is a common problem in the industry and various suppliers sells sealers to prevent moisture ingress and migration.

Dekro Paints designed Dekro Aquablock  Water Repellent that is based upon a complex aluminum compound with outstanding waterproofing properties and high durability.  Unlike ordinary waterproofing solutions the treated surface may be over-painted when required without loss of adhesion.  It is ideal for use on brickwork, concrete and other porous surfaces exposed to the weather.  Dekro Aquablock water Repellent can hardly be detected preserving the appearance and character of the substrate.  An important property is its ability to reduce dirt retention even on rough substrates.

Before any coating is applied ensure that all your plaster pointing has been repaired. Dekro Aquablock also prevents mould and moss growth on the surfaces even where damp and moist areas are prevalent.

Water permeable coatings for boundary and garden walls

Boundary and garden walls are the most common substrates where delaminating paint occurs. This is more than likely due to defective damp course systems, structural defects such as expansion and construction joints as well as incorrect coatings specified.

If all waterproofing related items has been attended to then applying a flexible acrylic system will guarantee longevity of the coating permitting that proper encapsulation of parapets has been completed.

What should you do if you can’t afford expensive waterproofing repairs? By applying water permeable coatings you can allow water to permeate through the coating without causing delamination however discoloration due to migrating moisture might still occur.

Dekro Masonry Paint is an outstanding quality “Pliolite” co-polymer type coating that combines alkali resistance with water vapour permeability and moisture repellence.

Always contact your Dekro Representative for technical advice regarding water permeability of coatings and application procedures.
